Bronze Statues

Most of the bronze statues created in Asia from ancient times to the present have a religious connotation. Asia, with it's multitudes of temples, has maintained a great need for quality bronze statues, resulting in the development of bronze casting as a refined art.

Bronze artistry is found in modern times in remote villages of Nepal and South India. There craftsman cast bronze with what is known as the lost-wax process, achieving the greatest detail in the statues features.

First the statue is carved meticulously in wax. Then the wax is covered with clay and dried slowly in an oven. The wax melts and one is left with a precise clay mold. Because the original wax sculpture is lost it is called the 'lost-wax process.' Thus no two sculptures will be exactly alike.

Then, molten bronze (copper, brass, silver, and gold) is poured into the mold. After cooling the mold is broken and the cast bronze statue is removed.

shivaThe sculptor will then etch the last fine details and polish the statue. When completed, the Bronze Statue shines brilliantly. Older bronzes produce a green oxide on their surface, a natural occurrence, considered an enhancement of the statues beauty.

Silk Elephant has obtained a number of attractive bronzes from India and Nepal, not available elsewhere. We invite you to browse our pages and see for yourself.
